How to Extend the Results of Teeth Whitening

Are your teeth looking dull and discolored? Does your smile lack the brightness it once had? Do you find yourself holding back at work or in social situations because of concerns about the dingy color of your teeth?

If stained teeth are affecting how you feel about yourself, teeth whitening can not only brighten your smile, but it can help restore your self-confidence.

Dr. Jennifer Sunkin here at Hudson River Dental Arts provides teeth-whitening procedures that safely and effectively remove stains and discoloration on your teeth.

When you have your teeth whitened with us at Hudson River Dental Arts, the results can last for 1-2 years or more. You can optimize the results of teeth whitening and extend them even longer by following the steps outlined here.

Choose professional whitening

You’ve probably seen teeth whitening kits in drugstores. These kits don’t provide the same long-lasting results that come from professional whitening performed in our dental office.

To whiten teeth, Dr. Sunkin uses a powerful but safe whitening agent made with hydrogen peroxide. During your appointment, which takes less than an hour, you wear a tray containing the whitening solution. As the ingredients in the solution break down stains, light-powered technology intensifies the whitening process, brightening your teeth by several shades in just one session.

Drugstore whiteners simply can’t deliver the same powerful results as the in-office treatment we offer.

Brush regularly

After you have your teeth whitened, regular brushing helps keep them bright. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing twice daily with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months, or more often if the bristles look frayed.

You may be tempted to use a hard-bristled toothbrush to scrub off stains. But stick with soft bristles, because hard bristles can damage your gums.

Floss regularly

Flossing helps remove food and bacteria between and around teeth. The ADA recommends flossing once a day. You can floss any time of day, before or after brushing.

Alternatives to flossing include dental floss picks, pre-threaded flossers, and powered air or water flossers.

Know the foods that stain teeth

Food and drinks, including the following, are the most common causes of tooth stains and discoloration:

After having your teeth whitened, you don’t have to avoid these foods. But you can help prevent staining and protect your pearly whites by brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth immediately after you consume them.

Quit smoking

Smoking can quickly turn teeth yellow or even brown. For advice on quitting, along with helpful resources and 24/7 support, go to Smokefree.gov.

Have touch-up treatments

Touch-up treatments can help keep your teeth white. Dr. Sunkin can help you decide whether you could benefit from touch-up treatments, and how often you might need them.
