Pediatric Dentistry Q & A

What is pediatric dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is dedicated to maintaining and maximizing the oral health of younger patients, from infants to adolescents. Children have different dental needs than adults, and for a child, a trip to the dentist can be a scary experience.

Dental phobias tend to develop at a young age, and are often the result of bad experiences early on, making it especially important for your child to receive knowledgeable and specialized care at the dentist.

Why should I visit a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist distinguishes themselves in a number of ways, including:

Specialized care

A pediatric dentist provides specialized care for your child’s unique needs, such as teething issues and losing baby teeth. Seeing the same dentist consistently throughout your child’s life allows for a continuity of care that ensures better treatment.

Compassion

A pediatric dentist has spent more time working with children and is used to being more gentle and taking greater care in their procedures.

Patience

A pediatric dentist is tuned in to your child’s psychology and is better equipped to deal with their dental fear and anxiety. They have more tools at their disposal to put your child at ease in the chair and are more familiar with the amount of time and energy it might take to make your child relaxed.

When should my child start seeing a dentist?

Your child should start seeing a dentist as soon as possible, which means as soon as they get their first tooth!

There are a few advantages to starting dental care at an early age. It gives your child a head start in establishing a healthy and comfortable relationship with their dentist. It also gives them the opportunity to learn about good oral hygiene and develop stronger and healthier habits that will carry on into adulthood.

Starting dental care early also allows your dentist to start tracking any suspicious conditions that would benefit from early intervention, like a predisposition for cavities or improper alignment of your child’s teeth or bite.

What should I expect from my child’s dental visit?

Your child’s first few appointments typically consist of a basic exam and routine cleaning. Dr. Sunkin visually examines your child’s mouth for any signs of tooth decay or gum disease, then uses special tools to gently clean away any hard-to-reach plaque or hardened tartar.

After your child’s teeth cleaning, Dr. Sunkin teaches them how to practice good at-home care, and informs you of any bad oral habits she might have noticed, like tongue thrusting or thumb sucking. She can give you advice on how to curb those behaviors to optimize your child’s oral health.

What services do you offer?

Hudson River Dental Arts provides a wide range of services for children, including:

  • Cleanings
  • Exams
  • Fillings
  • X-rays
  • Extractions

When should my child's first dental visit be?

When the first tooth erupts in the mouth or at 1 year, whichever is sooner

How often should my child see the dentist?

It is recommended every 6mo for a check-up and cleaning.

At what age and why does my child need Xrays and why is it needed?

Typically we start at 5 years old unless there is a specific issue that needs to be addressed at an earlier age. X-rays are extremely important to diagnose cavities and issues that can be seen with just a visual exam. The earlier we treat issues, the easier it is for the child.

Why is fluoride good for my child's teeth?

Fluoride is one of the best and safest ways we can prevent cavities for children. Fluoride protects teeth by making the teeth stronger and more resistant to acid. It not only reduces the risk of cavities, it can even help reverse early signs of decay.

What is a sealant?

A sealant is a protective tooth-colored filling material that fills in the deep grooves of the biting surfaces of molars and premolars. It is non-invasive, so no drilling is required, and it prevents food from getting stuck in those grooves, which is the leading cause of cavities in teeth.
